Identify the relevant requests

Introduction

Identifying the right type of request is important to ensure that it is dealt with efficiently and that you can apply the correct time limits for processing the request.

Subject access request

A subject access request is the process of requesting personal information. If you are requesting information for which an individual will be identifiable, the appropriate request to make will be a subject access request. In school exclusion challenges, subject access requests will typically be the most common kind of information request.

Freedom of information request

A freedom of information request is the process of obtaining information from a public body that does not relate to an individual. This can include information about the organisation itself, its finances, or its operations. FOI is a great way to get statistics and unpublished policies from a school.
