School Exclusion Advocacy

School Exclusion Advocacy

Introduction

Coram’s Voices in Action project provides one-to-one advocacy support for children and young people at risk of school exclusion.

Who can we help?

Coram Voice advocates can support a small number of children and young people in the London area who are at risk of being excluded from school.

We can help children and young people who are:

  • At risk of unwanted temporary or permanent managed move as an alternative to permanent exclusion
  • Suspended, or have been in the past
  • Internally excluded/isolated, or have been in the past
  • At risk of exclusion
  • Not receiving the support agreed for their special educational needs and missing school as a result

We are unable to provide advocacy support to children and young people who have been permanently excluded from school.

What advocacy can we provide?

Our advocates work with children and young people. While advocates speak with and support families, children and young people lead the advocacy relationship and decide whether they want an advocate.

Our advocates will support children and young people to:

  • Express their wishes and feelings to the professionals involved
  • Understand their rights and entitlements
  • Understand decisions being made and to challenge decisions they are not happy with

Advocacy will include both face-to-face and virtual support and may involve the following:

  • Support at meetings
  • Support in communicating with professionals
  • Support making written representations
  • Support to make complaints
  • Support to access legal advice
